 MINUTES

Open Space Committee                                    April 21, 2004 / 7:30 pm
Present:        Judy Brainerd, Glen Collins, Laura Freeman, Sue Haley, Jeff Havlick, Sue Horton, Keith Johnson, Dave Read and Toni Stoker

Approval of Meeting Minutes
MOTION: Dave moved and Glen seconded to approve the March 24, 2004 meeting minutes.
                   APPROVED

Land Acquisition
Mumford , White and the Freeman Hatch All three properties are on the warrant for the next town meeting. Sunday April 25th is our “open house” for open space from 2 - 4. Dave Read will be stationed at the Freeman Hatch property, Toni, Judy and Laura will be stationed at Wiley Park and Sue Haley will lead a walk starting at 2pm from Cottontail through Meservey and the Nickerson property to the Mumford property. There is no parking available at the White property, so directions will be available at the other stations so interested parties can drive by the property. There will be information fact sheets and maps at each station.

Town Meeting: We will have members at Town Meeting at 6:30 to hand out flyers with information on the open space parcels.

Open Space Management Plan
Open Space & Recreation Plan Update
Sue Horton has drafted all the main sections of the plan. Sections were given back to the authors to proofread. Judy finished the last three sections of the plan and they will be melded into the rest of the plan. Keith is trying to get the Cape Cod Commission to produce and supply updated maps for the plan. The matrix is almost done – this lists every parcel that is town owned. The plan should be pulled together in its entirety by the next meeting.
Grant Application: There is another small grant available for projects such as building footbridges in open space parks. The bridge we will need to connect Wiley Park to the Mumford property is a perfect candidate for these grants. The Kodak Greenways grant is for $2500. The bridge should be constructed to allow for the passage of canoes and kayaks underneath.
Trail Progress: Reflecting back to three years ago, the condition of the trails (especially in Nickerson) have been improved tremendously. The Meservey property is clearly being used often, as the trail is well defined. AmeriCorp will be building steps leading down from Samoset Road at the beginning of the Meservey property and they have already built steps at the Upper Boat Meadow Creek property.

1651 Forest
Toni reported that some small Hickory saplings have been planted. There is a large planting of white pines planned. Fifth graders will be participating in the planting.

Conservation Commission
Glen said there is nothing unusual to report.

Other Business:
Open Space Brochure:  The brochure will have to be reworked to eliminate the boxes. At this point, we may as well wait until after Town Meeting to include other parcels that the town may purchase to the content of the brochure.

Next Meeting:   Our next open space meetings will be May 26, 2004 at 7:30 pm.

MOTION:         Sue Haley made a motion to adjourn. Sue Horton seconded.  APPROVED unanimously.
Adjourned at 8:30 pm

Respectfully submitted by Laura Freeman
